The Wilaya of El Bayadh is a wilaya of Algeria in North Africa. It has 228,624 inhabitants over an area of 71,697 km². The population density of the Wilaya of El Bayadh is therefore 3.2 inhabitants per km².

El Bayadh, El Abiodh Sidi Cheikh and Bougtoub are the largest cities in the Wilaya of El Bayadh among the 22 cities that compose it. The dry and cold semi-arid climate is the main climate of the Wilaya of El Bayadh.

The Wilaya of El Bayadh is divided into 8 daïras: the daïra of El Bayadh, the daïra of Rogassa, the daïra of Brezina, the daïra of El Abiodh Sidi Cheikh, the daïra of Bougtoub, the daïra of Chellala, the daïra of Boussemghoun and the daïra of Boualem.

Situation

The territory of the municipality of El Bayadh is located north of the wilaya of El Bayadh. The city is located 370 km southeast of Oran, 520 km southwest of Algiers, 500 km northeast of Béchar, 105 km from Bougtob and 194 km from Saïda.

The city commands the steppes to the north, and the Saharan Atlas to the south, in the transition zone between the Ksour mountains and the Djebel Amour

Relief

The city of El Bayadh is located southwest of Jebel Amour, in the Saharan Atlas, at an altitude of 1,200 m.

Weather

The climate in El Bayadh is cold semi-arid. The Köppen classification is of the BSk type. The average temperature is 14.2°C and the average annual rainfall does not exceed 300 mm. It often snows in winter, because of the altitude.

Transport 

El Bayadh has an airport located 10 km northeast of the city.

 Demography

According to the general population and housing census of 2008, the population of the municipality of El Bayadh is estimated at 91,632 inhabitants, including 85,577 inhabitants in the main agglomeration. It is the most populated municipality of its wilaya1.

The city experienced a major rural exodus following the sedentarization of nomads, from the Algerian war1.

Town planning

The urbanization of the city remains marked by the colonial fabric. Facing the colonial city. El Graba presents the animation of the old cities.

The crisis of nomadism during the last decade of colonization and the rural exodus gave rise to precarious habitats on the outskirts of the city. In 1993, the municipality decided to demolish the district of Sidi-Hadj-Bahous, because of its central location in the urban fabric of the city. The local authorities wanted to make it a future city center with the establishment of collective and administrative facilities as well as commercial facilities1 

Heritage

The region of El Bayadh is rich in prehistoric sites of rock engravings which mark out the Saharan Atlas1. The representations are essentially animal, but several human representations are associated with them2.

Economy 

Livestock has been the main activity in the El Bayadh region for a very long time4. The city has an important sheep market.

It is also a manufacturing center for Jebel Amour3 carpets.
