Presentation of the wilaya
The wilaya of Laghouat ( Arabic : ولاية الأغواط ), is an Algerian wilaya with the town of the same name as its capital .
Located in the center of the country, 400 km south of the capital Algiers , the wilaya covers 25,000 km². Region Pastoral Algeria, it also has the largest deposit of natural gas from Africa with reserves estimated at several billion cubic meters.
The wilaya of Laghouat includes 24 municipalities, spread over 10 daïras (administrative districts).
GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION (Relief - Climate, etc.)
Located at an altitude of more than 750 meters on the High Plateaux , the wilaya of Laghouat is crossed by the chain of the Saharan Atlas with peaks exceeding 2,000 meters ("Jebel Amour" 2,200 meters).

Relief:
The wilaya is distinguished by two distinct areas:
1- The Saharan Atlas area is characterized by altitudes ranging from 1000 m to 1700 m and slopes of 12.5 to 25 %. This area to the northwest of the wilaya ( Aflou and Brida regions ). It is made up of old forest areas with an area of 47,095 ha, alfatière sheets covering an area of 315,125 ha as well as pastures and rangelands with an area of 1,531,766 ha.
The population less than 15 years old represents 34 % of the total population.
2- The Hauts Plateaux and Saharan Plateaux zone , characterized by altitudes ranging from 700 to 1000 m and slopes of 0 to 3 %.
This area consists of vast stretches steppe with an area of 1 900 000 hectares , much of which has been degraded as a result of prolonged drought.
Weather :
Deriving from the relief, the climate is continental in the North-West with rainfall varying from 300 to 400 mm, snowfall and hoar frost.
In the Hauts Plateaux region, the climate is Saharan and arid. The rainfall varies between 150 mm in the Center and 50 mm in the South. Winters are characterized by white frosts and summers by strong heat accompanied by sandy winds.
ECONOMIC POTENTIALITIES
The wilaya has a large natural gas deposit at HASSI R'MEL, of national importance and a “dispatching” role from this center (5 pipelines).
■ Mineral resources: clay, building stone, tuff, limestone, gypsum, sand and freestone.
■ Existing industry: Textile industry, Food industry, Construction materials industry, Brickworks, Metal frame manufacturing, Petrochemical industry.
Agricultural potentials
Agriculture is considered one of the main sectors in the wilaya with a total agricultural area (SAT) of 2,008,706 ha.
The useful agricultural area (UAA) totals 73,013 ha which represents 3.81 % of the SAT and 1.61 % is irrigated with an area of the order of 30,812 ha.
The cultures practiced on the lands of the wilaya. Vary according to the nature of the soil. They are dominated by the following cultures :
- Cereals : 269,749 (Qx) with an area of 15,947 ha.
- Fruit arboriculture : 162,790 (Qx) with an area of 6,018 ha.
- Vegetable crops : 1,652,567 (Qx) with an area of 8,729 ha.
Animal productions
- Red meats : 177,387 (Qx).
- White meats : 7,090 (Qx).
- Milk : 61,165,000 (Liters).
- Eggs : 7,310,000 (Units).
- Honey : 18,000 (kg).
- Wool : 28 820 (Qx).
Livestock

Industry
No less than 108 plots of land have been allocated to investors out of a total of 222 plots located in this area which covers an area of 220 hectares, it was specified.
The wilaya of Laghouat also has eight (8) Activity Zones (ZA) at the level of the municipalities of the capital, Aflou, El-Kheneg, El-Assafia, Hassi R'mel, Brida, Ksar El-Hirane and Hassi Delaâ which total around 1,000 plots of land, it was reported.
ECONOMIC, ADMINISTRATIVE AND SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURES
Hydraulic
The wilaya is watered by about ten wadis : Oued Morra, Oued Touil, Oued M'zi, Oued Messaad, Oued nessaa, Oued Zargoune, Oued M'haigane, Oued Zegrir.
It includes the following dams :
- Seklafa Dam.
- Tadjmout Dam.

There are two airports, one at Hassi R'mel (Sonatrach) and the other at Laghouat (military airport).
Education :
The wilaya has 210 primary schools operating 1,439 classrooms for an enrollment of 47,505 students.
It has 72 medium-sized establishments using 969 classrooms. There are 39,742 students.
The wilaya has 30 secondary schools and an annex using 435 classrooms distributed among 16 municipalities. The number of pupils is 15,998.
Health
The wilaya of Laghouat has two hospitals with a total of 565 beds located in the two urban centers Laghouat and Aflou ; ie an average of 1.08 beds per 1,000 inhabitants, and seven EPSP located across the municipalities of Laghouat, Ksar Hirane, Hassi Delaa, Ain Madhi, Aflou, G. Sidi Saad, and Brida).
The different health sectors (hospitals) are made up of :
- 29 polyclinics ;
- 52 treatment rooms ;
- 1 hospital for 260,094 inhabitants ;
- 1 polyclinic for 17,938 inhabitants ;
- 1 treatment room for 10,004 inhabitants.
TOURIST ACTIVITIES
The province has a rich and varied history which can be a niche market to develop tourism in the region, especially with the existence of : stations engravings rock , prehistoric tools, mounds of dry stone , of shelters under rocks with piles of ash and charred bones in the middle of which we find roughly cut flint, proving the presence of a human community and this, before prehistoric times. Remains and historical sites testifying to the presence of an indigenous sedentary population that will later be called " Berbers ", which were concentrated at the level of Oued M'Zi .
