Presentation of the wilaya

The wilaya of Mostaganem (in Arabic : ولاية مستغانم     , in Tamazight : ⵜⴰⵎⵏⴰⴹⵜ ⵏ ⵎⴻⵙⵜⵖⴰⵍⵉⵎ ) is an Algerian wilaya located in the North-West of the country.     

Mostaganem is located 104 meters above sea level on the edge of a coastal plateau. The city contemplates to the west the wide bay of Arzew which ends with the Jebel Orousse.
Considered a port city of the Mediterranean, located in the north-west of Algeria, 363 km west of Algiers, covers an area of ​​2269 km2. Made up of 10 daira and 32 municipalities.

GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION (Relief - Climate, etc.) 

The wilaya of Mostaganem is located in the northwest of the country. It is delimited : 

• to the north, by the Mediterranean ;  
• to the west, by the wilaya of Oran ;  
• to the east, by the wilaya of Chlef ;  
• to the south, by the wilayas of Mascara and Relizane ;   

Relief

The relief of the Wilaya of Mostaganem is divided into four morphological units belonging to two distinct regions, the Mostaganem Plateau and the Dahra  :   

• the low valleys of the west include the municipalities : Hassi Mameche , Mazagran , Stidia , Aïn Nouïssy , El Hassiane and Fornaka .        
• the Dahra Mountains include the municipalities : Sidi Belattar , Oued El Kheir , Sidi Ali , Ouled Maallah , Tazgait , Nekmaria , Kheireddine , Ain Boudinar and Safsaf .           
• the Mostaganem plateau includes the municipalities : Mostaganem , Ain Tedles , Sour , Bouguirat , Sirat , Souaflia , Mesra , Aïn Sidi Cherif , Mansourah , Touahria and Sayada .             
• the eastern valleys include the municipalities: Achaacha , Khadra , Ouled Boughalem , Sidi Lakhdar , Hadjadj and Abdelmalek Ramdane .       

Forests cover 14.2 % of the area of ​​the wilaya. 

Weather

The climate of the wilaya is characterized by a semi arid climate with temperate winter and a rainfall that varies between 350 mm on the plateau and 400 mm on the foothills of Dahra  .       

It has three different climates and is dominated by the hot Mediterranean climate in summer and two other semi-arid climates , one hot and the other cold which is the climate of the capital  .

ECONOMIC POTENTIALITIES

Agricultural potentials

The wilaya of Mostaganem is one of the most agricultural in the country, it enjoys a climate favorable to agriculture, it has developed a diversified agriculture

The agricultural sector of the wilaya occupies a useful agricultural area of ​​132,268 Ha including : 30,595 Ha irrigated distributed across 24,535 farms. 

The agricultural activities of the Wilaya are characterized by arboriculture, market gardening and cereal cultivation, namely :  

Production year 2010

  The wilaya is currently experiencing very significant agricultural activity, Increase in production during the year 2019/2020 of the following products: (Cereals, Dried Vegetables, Market gardening, Fruit growing shelter, Vineyard).

Industry

The industrial sector brings together four main branches : the agro-food industry, the wood and cellulose industry, the manufacturing industry, and mining and quarrying  . Fishing is another economic activity in the wilaya 18 .  

Maritime fishing

The halieutic production recorded during the year 2012 is of the order of 7,865,161 tons all species combined: (see table below)

The Flotilla of the wilaya is made up of 181 fishing units distributed as follows :

ECONOMIC, ADMINISTRATIVE AND SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURES

Hydraulic 

The wilaya of Mostaganem includes the following dams :  

• Cheliff dam .
• Kramis Dam  .
• Gargar Dam  .
• Sidi Abed dam  .

 Road network 

Port infrastructure

The wilaya has three ports:
- Port of goods of Mostaganem.
- Sidi Lakhdar fishing port.
- Salamandre fishing and marina port.

 Rail network

There is a track for the transport of goods connecting the port to the station of Mostaganem in the direction of Mohammedia. 

Education :  

The wilaya has primary schools, CEMs and high schools

Health :  

The wilaya includes 6 general hospitals (in Mostaganem, Sidi Ali , Aïn Tedles , Mesra , Bouguirat , Achaacha ) and 2 specialized hospitals (EHS) (EHS Mother-Children Lala Kheira, EHS psychiatric). The Kharouba University Hospital should open in 2021 19 . The wilaya also includes 6 local health establishments which provide primary care (EPSP) comprising 28 polyclinics and 162 treatment rooms spread over the territory of the wilaya  .       

TOURIST ACTIVITIES

The wilaya also has several tourist attractions: museums, old mosques, ancient districts ("Derb" and "Tobana"), caves and archaeological sites. It becomes a tourist pole, it has 15 tourist expansion zones and a coastal strip of 124 km , it is frequented by around ten million summer visitors every summer  . The most popular beaches are: Aïn Brahim , Petit Port , Bosquet , Clovis , Ouréah , Kharrouba and Les Sablettes  . -         

Hydrotherapy 

On the other hand, the region has several sources of underground mineral water capable of ensuring the development of thermal tourism, for example the thermal spa of Ain Nouissy, the source of Mekaberta (municipality of Sirat) , and the source of Sidi Benchaa (Sidi Ali) which remains unexploited.

- Reception infrastructures 

the wilaya of Mostaganem currently has 21 hotel establishments with a capacity of 1,460 beds : (As of 12/31/2012) 

- (08) Eight hotels in Mostaganem, including one (01) closed;  

- (06) Six tourist residences and two (02) motels.

Camping and holiday camps 

The campsite is completely oriented towards the seaside. There are 30 holiday camps, with a total capacity of 7,900 beds, spread across the coastal communities.

Tourism investments : 

Regarding investment opportunities, 16 tourist expansion zones (ZET) on the coastal strip of the wilaya have been identified extending over an area of ​​4,339 hectares, of which 1,797 ha are intended for construction for a reception capacity of 37,670 beds.

Crafts sector : 

Today, the wilaya of Mostaganem has more than 5,000 artisans registered in the various craft sectors, and employs more than 10,000 direct positions.
