Presentation of the wilaya

Annaba , formerly Bône during the period of French colonization and Hippone in Antiquity , is the fourth city in Algeria after the capital Algiers , Oran and Constantine . Capital of the wilaya of Annaba , Annaba is located 152 km northeast of Constantine, 246 km east of Jijel and about 80 km west of the Tunisian border . It is also a metropolis   coastline with a population over 700 000 inhabitants  .   

Annaba is located on the south shore of the Mediterranean ,. The city rises at the bottom of a bay open to the east on the Gulf of Annaba. It is dominated to the west by the Edough mountain range ( 1,008 m above sea level).     

The wilaya is made up of 12 municipalities spread over 06 daïras as specified below:

GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION (Relief - Climate, etc.) 

The wilaya is located 600 km from the capital Algiers , in the far east of the country, open to the Mediterranean coast for 80 km. It covers 1,439 km 2 or 0.06 % of the national territory. It is geographically limited by :         

• the Mediterranean Sea , to the north, 
• the wilaya of Guelma , to the south, 
• the wilaya of El-Taref , to the east, 
• the wilaya of Skikda to the west.  

Relief

Its relief consists mainly of : 

• Forest-based mountains : 52.16 %  
• Hills and foothills : 25.82 %  
• Plains : 18.08 %  

Weather

The climate of the wilaya of Annaba is Mediterranean , hot and temperate  . The area is richly watered (650-1 000 mm / year), its average temperature is 18 ° C .     

Annaba enjoys a Mediterranean climate . It is known for its long hot, dry summers. The winters are mild and humid there ; snowy days are rare. The rains are abundant and can be torrential. It is generally hot especially from mid-July to mid-August . 

NATURAL POTENTIALITIES

Forests

Its forests are suitable for sylvan activity, especially for cork and eucalyptus wood . It covers nearly 75,500 ha, including 15,000 ha of cork oak . The agro-pedological potential represents nearly 58,600 ha, particularly located in the plains of Seybouse and Lake Fetzara . Almost 58 % of arable land is located in the piedmont areas (38,700 ha).         

ECONOMIC POTENTIALITIES

Agricultural potentials

With a total agricultural area of ​​133,972 ha, including 43,850 ha of useful agricultural area, 75,424 ha of forest and 14,698 ha of rangelands and unproductive land, the wilaya of Annaba is considered to be a pole of agricultural development.

a) GENERAL DISTRIBUTION OF AGRICULTURAL LAND:

* OVERALL AGRICULTURAL SURFACE : 58,548 Hectares. 

* AGRICULTURAL SURFACE EXPLOITED: 48,177 Hectares. 

* PASTURE AREA : 4,885 Hectares. 

* WASTELAND AREA: 5.486 Hectares. 

b) MAIN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION:

* CEREALS: 180,000 Quintals. 

* VEGETABLES: 7.105 Quintals. 

* CITRUS: 54.875 Quintals. 

* AGRI-FOOD: 990,055 Quintals.  

* ORCHARDS: 994,860 Quintals. 

c) MAIN ANIMAL PRODUCTION:

* CATTLE: 47,875 Head.  

* SHEEP: 54,776 Head. 

* GOATS: 13,270 Head. 

* POULTRY: 2,282,100 Units. 

d) AGRICULTURAL PROFITABILITY PER HECTARE: 

* CEREALS: 12.95 Quintals / Hectare. 

* VEGETABLES: 8.64 Quintals / Hectare. 

* CITRUS: 105.32 Quintals / Hectare. 

* FORAGE: 994,860 Quintals / Hectare. 

* AGRI-FOOD: 160.07 Quintals / Hectare.  

Industry

The agglomeration of Annaba constitutes the second industrial pole of the country after that of the capital Algiers . The city is an important place for the steel industry  , with the steel complex of El Hadjar - which is the largest in Africa. 

The industrial zones occupy nearly 400 ha between Pont Bouchet, Meboudja, Berrahal, Kherraza. Activity zones are located in the suburbs of the city, in Sidi Salem, El-Eulma and Oued El-Aneb. The extension of the industrial zone of Annaba is associated with the construction of the new town of Draa Errich , 20 km away. 

Annaba is home to an important industrial center : 

• the steel complex of El Hadjar 
• The Seybouse phosphate complex
• The Allelik metallurgical complex
• Nearly 260 SMEs / SMIs in the fields of subcontracting and agro-industry .

Private industry is particularly concentrated in the food industry , metal processing, wood and its derivatives and construction.

The wilaya has a lake, the Fetzara which covers 6,600 ha and the Oued Seybouse , 255 km long , finds its mouth there.

The geographical position of the wilaya on the coast, its mountainous terrain, its cornice and its coast offer the best opportunities for seaside tourism . Three tourist extension zones exist :  

• Corniche d ' Annaba (Cap de Garde) : 375 ha    
• West Bay ( Chetaïbi ) : 382 ha.   
• Djenane El-Bey (Oued Begrat, Seraïdi ) : 137 ha.    

Annaba has significant tourist infrastructures including 13 classified hotels, 30 others not classified, 60 nearing completion, 20 classified restaurants, 14 travel agencies, the most famous of which is the ATS agency (Algerian Travel Services).
